Kotaku: Marathon fights for its life amid player collapse and layoffs
Kotaku reports that Marathon has had a rough summer, with Steam concurrent player counts declining sharply after mass Bungie layoffs earlier in 2026 hit the game's own team. The outlet frames the newly delayed December Symbiosis update as a make or break moment for whether the extraction shooter can survive long term. Other outlets have echoed the same concern, questioning Marathon's viability as a live service game now that its seasonal schedule has been scrapped.

The departure adds to concerns about stability on the extraction shooter's development team heading into the delayed December Symbiosis update.
